Arguments Against Mandatory Volunteerism

Mandatory volunteerism is a topic that has been appearing more and more in Congress. Mandatory volunteerism is the act of forcing young adults to give up years of their lives for government service. The act of the government forcing volunteering is unconstitutional. Mandatory Volunteerism is unconstitutional. Nowhere in the founding document of the United States can it be found stating the action of forcing government service as being constitutional. America’s founding documents do not give Congress the authority to require mandatory service from American citizens. Article 1, section 8 of the United States Constitution lays out the authorities Congress have (art. 1, sec. 8). The Declaration of Independence, the founding principle of the constitution, states, “that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their creator with certain unalienable rights, that among are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness” (para 2). This statement points out that the people of the United States have the right to do with their lives what they wish to do with it. It in addition it also says, “Governments are instituted among men, deriving their just powers from consent of the governed” (para 2). Which means the government cannot do what the people do not want them to do. Furthermore, Amendment XIII of the constitution forbids slavery or involuntary servitude except as a punishment for crime (amend. XIII, sec. 1). Involuntary servitude is the term used to describe someone laboring against their will to benefit another under some form of coercion other the worker’s financial needs. In addition, Article 2 Section 2 states clearly what the President can do (art. 2, sec. 2). Some continue to argue that mandatory volunteerism allows young adults to explore career options and gain work skills. They would be wrong; people cannot earn gain work skills when they are not maximizing their potential doing something they are not interested in. Some may say the constitutionality of mandatory volunteerism by pointing out that Section 2 of the 13th Amendment says “Congress shall have the power to enforce this article by appropriate legislation” (amend XIII, sec 2). Some may try to argue that mandatory community service fulfills the needs of the community. People say it is not involuntary servitude since the most recent proposals have four years of college tuition as a reward for two years of service. It in addition to include a plan for the people who do not choose to go to college with payments for the service to go towards job-training programs or to help start a business. Hillary Clinton, a democrat presidential candidate in the 2016 election, in Nevada after winning the Nevada state caucus in on February 20, 2016 said, “We are all in this together we all have to do our part...
