Marijuana is the most commonly used drug in the United States. However, it has the singular distinction of being both a commonly used illegal substance and also a legally prescribed medicinal substance in some states. Marijuana has been scientifically proven to reduce pain in patients suffering from conditions like Rheumatoid Arthritis. Since the medical properties of this plant have been documented, why is it not legalized throughout the United States? This would both increase accessibility to the treatment for patients in states where medical marijuana is currently not legal and decrease the tax burden associated with the current criminalization of marijuana users. The number one reason why there are crime rates when it comes to marijuana possession is because it is illegal. More and more people get arrested even if not everyone possesses them for negative reasons. More than 800,000 people are arrested for marijuana and by merely possessing the substance, while the rest were either selling or manufacturing marijuana. When you legalize marijuana, less people will be arrested for the right reasons. When legalizing marijuana, it would be lowering prices due to greater availability or supply. Marijuana is in great demand, thus increasing the economy because more and more people will purchase them if it was legalized. With that being said, we can look at new tax revenues and compare marijuana to tobacco. When marijuana is legalized, governments can start taxing marijuana just like tobacco and start earning from it as well. There are very clear points that outlining that the legalizing marijuana would benefit the United States of America. I say that with complete confidence because of the medical capabilities, economic relief, crime reduction, free resources and the fact that it has been decriminalized in a couple states. All of these points are related with each other and directly impact the United States in a positive way. The pro marijuana legalization is backed with many facts that make it the better option while the “nay-sayers” are driven by a false assumption that marijuana is a terrible drug that only causes problems. People need to open their eyes and stop being ignorant about the fact that marijuana being legal would help the United States in dire need of help. Too many people still look down on the drug simply due to its false reputation. Most of the people against it have never once looked into the benefits it holds and may never will. No one is telling you to use marijuana as well, but the choice should be free for anyone to choose. We all seek pleasure in our life every day and everyone has his or her own way to achieve that. For some, that source of pleasure is marijuana and all they want is to gain that pleasure like others do.
