While helpful the result of this reliance is a less informed population being controlled by their connection to a phone and inevitably those who control that connection. Cell phones seem beneficial with their diverse capabilities but the dependency people form for them is dangerous mentally, emotionally, and physically.
Problem
The absence of a cell phone has various consequences whether it is the emotional loss or the inaccessibility to needed information, nearly every owner reacts strongly in some way. First, since these devices have become so vital to everyday life that sense of attachment causes people to react strongly when they are missed (Vincent 2). Studies by Vincent and Harper showed evidence of this, “It was found that many of them felt emotional about the information contained on and delivered via their mobile phone and had come to depend on the device—at times too much.” (Vincent 2). Device have become so personalized that people are invested into them because they have become such a universal tool. This is why these issues should be addressed early in life so even if an individual is without their device they will not be hopeless at achieving their task. Most agree that students should be taught basic life skills that are necessary for adulthood such as balancing a checkbook and the tools within a cellphone should be included in such curriculum. Schooling should take charge to successfully spread awareness of the growing issues associated with lack of self-reliance. By offering courses in primary and secondary schooling that teach skills such as reading a map, memorization techniques, basic math and so on would produce well-rounded individuals that are not only prepared for further schooling but also for living in this era. The courses need to also include the importance of the separation between owner and device. School should discourage the use tools like the calculator until it is certain that the basics division, decimals, fractions, etcetera are known. They should use this to model how to take action against other applications that over simplify basis task. Along with practice, students need to also be shown how difficult life can be without these skills when a phone is unavailable.
