The Benefits Of Changing The Voting Age

The age for voting has been a discussion for a long time, it has changed to fit the views of the people and what they think is the idealistic age. Now the debate is whether it should be changed to a lower age than it is now. One thought is to change the age allowing you to vote to 16. In the past, the age was lowered from 21 to 18 during the second World War. The reasoning behind the switch was “old enough to fight, old enough to vote.” The men were being sent off to war for their country but weren’t given the right to vote for their country's president. Also it might’ve changed the end result in those elections. However now in the present day, to what extent would lowering the voting age be effective in determining a fair outcome to presidential elections? This discussion is quite important to be seen through a political type lens. Changing the …show more content…
Looking more into how changing the age in a political perspective can help discover some pros or cons in the decision. A way of seeing what it can do for the elections is that it will make it so more people will vote. This will result in there being maybe a more evident choice of who the majority wants. On the other hand, some people believe that it will be a lower turnout because they are unwilling or unable to vote. There have been studies and polls to look more into this claim. Markus Wagner, David Johann, and Sylvia Kritzinger used a survey

This semester in history, we talked about many things that I would not think about on a daily basis outside of school. Our lessons made me think in new ways about different concepts. The two things that made me most interested were learning about the Dakota Access Pipeline involving the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe and the requirements for voting for the President of the United States. DAPL made me more aware of our environment and realize how one thing could drastically affect so many areas of our world. It also made me see that there are many cons but there are also many pros.…

“The Supreme Court held, with considerable disagreement, that the federal 18-year-old voting age requirement is valid for national elections, but not for State or local elections.” The Checks and Balances worked very well in this case. The Legislative branch made the law to where all voting age was 18-years-old in National, State, and local elections. The Executive branch enforced the law, and then the Judicial branch interpreted and checked the law and ended up sending it back. The Justices said that only the States, and not the Congress, have the authority to establish the qualification rules for voters in State and local elections.…

Americans should not be required to vote. Once an action becomes required by the law, it becomes a chore. Document B shows the difference in rates of adults who are above 30 and under who vote. Ages 18 to 29 are at a little above 50%, while the rest start at 60% and go up. It is evident that younger Americans are not as interested or devoted to our elections.…

Possibly taking money from the younger generation would help economically, it would also cause too damage because of teen crashes. The death rate of American teens I could see easily double or even triple because of lowering the drinking age to 18. Another con is the development of the average person’s brain stops at 25 lowering the age would insure that a lot of immature people would be out there. In the 1980s a law was passed on the drinking age to be increased to 21, while some still drink at age 18 it is not done publicly.…

As the United States has grown from a small, agrarian nation of 2.5 million men and women to a burgeoning superpower of more than 300 million, a great transformation has ensued: Suffrage has expanded from only land-owning white Protestant men to all Americans, regardless of skin, gender, or creed, above the age of 18. Indeed, the massive growth of liberty which has occurred since 1776 is one of our nation’s proudest achievements. But this great national mission has not reached its conclusion, for younger Americans are denied the ability to influence the government’s agenda. For a land conceived in freedom to further realize the democratic ideal it has yearned and shed blood for, it is essential that we take a novel step forward: Lowering the voting age to 16.…

    Essay On Voting Age

According to an article on The Cincinnati Enquirer, studies have shown that voting is a habit to begin early. It was found that if people don’t start out as voters when they are young, they are less likely to ever vote. One of these studies included a Yale University study in which it was discovered that students shown how to operate a voting machine were more than twice as likely to vote as students who weren’t shown. Lowering the voting age would both increase voter turnout and further educate citizens about the voting process, in turn causing them to vote more responsibly than some young adults today. It is for these reasons that I strongly believe that the voting age in the United States should be lowered to sixteen years of age.…

First of all, the outrageous criteria to be eligible to vote here in the United States is undoubtedly preposterous. To vote, you first have to be 18 years or older ("What Are the Requirements to Be Eligible to Vote in Federal Elections?"). While this may seem justified, many people eager to vote are being withheld from doing so because of this age requirement. Voting shouldn’t be off limits to someone because of their age! Instead, the age requirement should be lowered significantly in order to allow more freedom for a surplus of citizens.…

This is a good point but overall we should not be forcing the uneducated to vote. The frontal lobe of the brain is responsible for judgment and decision-making and does not fully develop until the age of twenty-one, so it would be more logical to change the voting limit to twenty-one. It would also make sense to have people pass a basic constitution test before voting. This will sort out the wise from the unwise because only the people who truly care to do research will put the time and effort into voting. This will keep the uneducated from voting, while still giving everyone the opportunity to…

Should voting be changed to 21? In my opinion, no not only because there is a large group of young adults but also its giving the youth time to finally be an adult and get them in the knowing with politics. Involving the youth in today's society could actually help in the long run. I am against changing the age to 21 to vote because legally you're an adult at 18 which means you should be able to make choices just like any above 18. Something that presidents talk about or try to change affects the youth that could've been avoided by letting the minority cast their vote.…
