Many believe that all those who are poor and homeless are those who do not hold a job position and are only surviving on funds received through governmental aid. Barbara Ehrenreich’s essay called “Nickel-and-Dimed on (Not) Getting By in America” it is proven that this is not the case. Barbara sets out on a journey and decides to plunge into the workforce of a low-wage worker by utilizing the research method of participant observation. She isn’t entirely experiencing the true life of a poor person. She acknowledges that she is healthy, has no children to take care of, and has many real-life assets such as a bank account and health insurance that hold her back from experiencing this to the fullest (Ehrenreich 2005).…

Historically, Sammie could be considered to be drafted into the military. During this time period, it was easy for men to be taken from their families.…

They outline the differences between a minimum and living wage. The amount needed in order for someone to cover all the basic expenses in life determines a living wage (Klein). Advocates of a higher federal minimum wage protest that the minimum wage doesn’t support families and doesn’t represent a living wage. Glasmeier describes the situation by stating that, “A typical family of four needs to work more than 3 full-time minimum-wage jobs (a 68-hour work week per working adult) to earn a living wage.” argued as impossible for most families.…

After raw materials ($75.00) and labor ($15.00), I make $10.00 per hour. This does not include paying rent on the building and utilities, but we will ignore those expenses for now. I work each of them 30 hours a week, and they each make $225 a week. That results in a yearly salary of $11,700. Our company is going well, but then the government decides the minimum wage should go to $10.10 an hour.…

I am a person that feels like the minimum wage should be raised and that people should be getting paid more than they are getting paid right now. There are a few reasons why I feel this way and strongly believe that something should be done about the situation. People are doing to much work for what they are getting paid so it makes the people feel overworked. One of the reasons that I feel this way is because with what I am getting paid right now it is hard for me to pay my bills. $7.35 is not enough to live off of when you have a lot to pay for.…

Intro: The federal minimum wage is $7.25 an hour, which means that depending on where you live, working for an hour will barely buy you a Chipotle burrito (this is without guac). Because of inflation, the minimum wage today is worth a few dollars less than before. Many politicians agree that we should raise minimum wage. Bernie sanders for example said “Nobody who works 40 hours a week should be living in poverty, a job should lift workers out of poverty, not keep them in it.”…

The social problem that I have chosen to write about is the issue of the livability (or lack thereof) of the minimum wage in the city of Chicago. I think it’s a social problem because the current minimum wage in Chicago, $10/hr (abc7chicago.com) is not nearly enough for people to live off of, and it impacts a gigantic number of people. About 329,000 people in Chicago make under $15 an hour [the proposed minimum wage] (Fortino 1). A social problem also involves people needing a resource that is not readily available to them, and in this instance, it involves people needing money that isn’t there when it’s needed. One of the major effects of living on minimum wage is emotional stress and feelings of anxiety.…

But if I am able to live more than comfortably I would have no reason to go to school. I feel that minimum wage needs to be a stepping stone for people like me to move onto better things. Furthermore, my feelings on this are strong because feeding another mouth is not cheap and leaves a lot of funds to be spent on luxuries, not necessities. People should not be able to feed a family off minimum wage. Some people think that raising the minimum wage to fifteen dollars an hour is a good idea.…
