I believe the Benedictine values are crucial for leadership. To be an effective leader, one must focus immensely on community, building trust among their group mates and fostering an overarching environment where all members are accepted and able to share ideas and strive together for a common good. Beyond this, leaders must always practice hospitality. In my opinion, leadership is largely shown and done by example. Thus, good leaders, must demonstrate their acceptance of others and openness to a diverse community of people in order to get the rest of the group on board with this positive way of thinking and acting. Moderation is also key as leaders must learn to balance their talking and listening time, thus realizing that leading does not mean always being "in charge" or the center of attention. Furthermore, delegation is key to success. No organization can be successful unless all parts have a chance to lead and to do their part. Prayer enables leaders to understand they are not alone. Often in leadership roles, it may feel as though you are the lead person or to lose direction. Prayer allows leaders to gain guidance from God and serves as a reminder that our work serves a greater purpose than we may think. Respect for Persons again reflects acceptance of different viewpoints and backgrounds in a group. By practicing this value, leaders and groups can gain new perspectives on issues and new strategies they may not have previously considered. Perhaps the most important value to leadership is service. We have learned a lot about Robert Greenleaf 's idea of "Servant Leadership." Thus, I believe it is extremely important that leaders understand their position is not dictatorial, but rather it is that of a facilitator and a mere part of the whole.
