The Beginner Ballroom Dance Project

Improved Essays
As it pertains to our group dance project, I could not be happier with the outcome. I am on a team of like-minded people who all strive for success while also knowing how to enjoy the experience. Kloe, Nick, Maddie, and myself connected within the first few days of the course, united by our own novice background in ballroom dance. As our skill set grew, so did our companionship, and we were eager to work cooperatively on this final project. We were a bit worried when everyone was called to split up based on the style they would like to perform. Thankfully, no one else lunged at the opportunity for the foxtrot, so we were able to secure a dance style together. While we agreed the foxtrot may not be as outwardly fun as the cha-cha or east coast …show more content…
I always enjoyed starting my week off by driving to the WRC and focusing on something other than my assignments, projects, responsibilities, etc. The most attractive feature of the course was the blend of both physical and mental exercise. As a leader, I had to work my mind to remember signals and cues while simultaneously coordinating my body movements to match the rhythm and my partner. There was a marked improvement from the way I held myself originally in the waltz as compared to east coast swing. By the end I had more confidence in my abilities and more familiarity with my colleagues. Some days I think it would be nice if the class were a full semester in length, only to continue gaining knowledge in an area I know next to nothing about and to have a structured outlet from the stresses of senior …show more content…
I am glad we have spent a morning refreshing our memories of each of the five styles, but how long will that last? I have a plethora of weddings to attend in the coming year. If I am not regularly exposing myself to the dances, then I am not certain in my power to recall them come next summer. Another issue I would run into is finding a suitable dance partner. It has been easy for us to dance with our classmates since everyone should have a basic understanding of each style. Yet most potential followers will not have a clue how to dance. On the instructor evaluation sheet I commented on how video links to each move would be greatly beneficial for students. That way we would have a reference to draw on outside of class instead of sifting through the Internet with half-forgotten terminology. But in any case, lack of knowledge will not stop me from at least making an attempt when a big band tune is playing. Everyone knows there’s nothing more suave and sophisticated as a man who knows how to

All of the performers would be considered amateurs in the dance discipline, most having only a year of dance experience from their public high school. This dance was a sassy, slower performance; using the dancers long lines to appear as a sexier routine. To make the dance more appealing numerous lifts were added and the technique of fall and recover was a common technique. The dance as a whole was a good attempt of having inexperienced dancers performing rather simple…

The music starts and a dozen little girls and boys start twirling and craning their necks to watch their dance instructor coach them from the wings. Most of their parents aren't concerned with the dance training their children are receiving. A friend of a friend told them about "Dolly Dinkle's Dance Academy" and so they signed little Susie up,bought her a pink leotard, and told her to have fun at dance class. American tap dancing evolved from African stomp style dancing and Irish step dancing, which is known in modern day as Irish Riverdancing. A percussive style dance where rhythm is made with metal taps, is a dance that can be performed without music due to the drumming of the taps worn on the shoes to create the harmony. Transformed from African Stomping, American Tap Dancing uses rapid foot movement where the dancer, taps complex rhythmic patterns to create a highly energetic performance. “Tap is an unusual dance form because it depends on being heard as well as seen.” Over the hundreds of years in the making, tap dancing, the shoe worn, and the talent that has derived from this style of dance has had an astronomical influence on the dance…

Modern Dance Class I went to observe the modern dance class on a thursday morning. This class was split into six different groups of at least 5 people in each. They were all taught a choreography a couple of days before and everything had to be memorized by the time it was their turn to dance. The class as a whole is doing well in communicating and in waiting for each other as they dance. These groups were randomly chosen and they all had to work together to make the choreography look nice, they had no idea who was going to be in their groups.…

Watching dance in person is an unforgettable experience. No matter how many different dances you watch on video, there is no substitute for seeing it in person. Observing the technique class and the rehearsal gave me so much insight on how much work is put into each individual dance. It made me realize that dancers are perfectionists and will persistently go over one small part of a dance until it is absolutely perfect. Observing the technique class and rehearsal allowed me to see the dedication the dancers and instructors have to their art.…

Just like there are different styles of singing there are different styles of dancing. At first before I even watched these videos, I thought dancing was very straightforward. After watching these videos, I have learned that dancing is more than just moving bodies. It is a lot of knowledge and also takes a lot of effort and time to establish real dance.…
