In “The Beggar”, the characters display a lot of personality, especially Lushkoff the beggar. He is pleading from lawyer Skvortsoff to give him some charity, for he has not one kopeck to support himself. “Help me kindly,” he begs, “ I am ashamed to ask, but- I am obliged to by circumstances” (page 151). He is a man of kindness and feels ashamed to ask for money, but he has no other choice. However, Skvortsoff recognized this man from before, and found him to be lying about his past. The beggar claims to have been a village schoolteacher who was fired through intrigues about a year ago, yet Skvortsoff argues that two days ago he was claiming to be an expelled student?! The lawyer immediately loses his temper and starts screaming at the penniless
