The Beauty of Human Skin in Every Color is a TED talk by Angélica Dass that discusses racism and a project that collects the portraits of people of various skin colors.
In the beginning of the talk, Angélica introduced her family background and described their skin colors by comparing it with other objects, such as chocolate, cinnamon, and pancake. Although the society indeed has made some progress in celebrating diversity, mass propaganda that harms certain group of people still exists, and discrimination is still prevalent.
In fact, the skin color bias exists in my country, Indonesia. Although most Indonesians are very tolerant towards people who come from different backgrounds or nationalities, stereotypes of the people with darker skin colors exist. Among Indonesians, lighter skin signifies beauty and wealth, and this image is often supported by the media that often portrays Indonesians with dark skin color (e.g., Papuan people) as exotic, backward people. White people are often seen as superior, and Indonesians with a very light skin color often get complimented simply for being light skinned.
Clearly, the bias towards skin color is a global issue that happens all around the world. While some people might purposefully nurture discrimination for their own benefit, others simply refuse to speak against the status quo. This results in the continuous harms among the least powerful
