The beast is something inside us that can tell you right from wrong, it is similar to a conscious another side of us that has the urge to do the wrong thing or even, inflict pain on others. In the book the boys are not sure what the beast is, some of them think it is a literal beast or something that is similar to a monster in their eyes.
