The Northern states had roughly a population of 22 million people the Southern states had about 9 million. So, if I do my math correctly, the North outnumbered the South two to one. With the success of industrializing the North, the North was more financially ready to support its troops with the resources it required to fight this war. I have shown you several examples as what led to the secession of several states in the South. The secession was believed to had come from what a lot of people of our generation due to slavery, but in fact upon conducting research some believe it was an infringement of certain state’s rights. Some northerners believe the only way to preserve the Union as a shining example of liberty was to abolish slavery for good. It has been seen by man as “rich man’s battle” but a “poor man’s war.” As you can see the wealthy were able to capitalize from their wealth and have substitute soldiers take their place on the battle field.
