The Beach Epilogue

Waves crashed over rocks tall enough to pierce the sky as we reached the shore in the dinghy. I stepped into the crystal clear water and saw a plethora of seagulls around the rocky hills. “I’ll pick you up here in about 2 hours,” our charter captain called as he drove away, “Enjoy the Baths!” We started our trek to the beach, my mom and dad leading and my sister Emily and I trailing behind. As we reached the beach Emily grabbed my hand and pulled me ahead to see the beach. The beach was deserted except for a few seagulls and a sign stating there was no lifeguard on duty and to beware of high winds and strong currents. As Emily and I headed down towards the water my mom called out a warning to be careful that we ignored. “Emilyyyyyy let’s

Leaving all my belongings behind, I head straight to the sea and paddle for the giant’s causeway where the waves looked clean. I become in an intense combined state of euphoria, peace, presence and excitement; it’s kind of like time ceases. Paddling out wasn’t as hard as I thought. But before I get to too relaxed, a large set breaks on the shallow sand bank. I was just caught on the inside.…

There I was sitting in an old 2006 Honda Odyssey driving up to my cottage on Lake Michigan. I had already been in the car for 4 hours and I was only halfway done with my journey. The traces in my mind of my life in Tennessee escaped my thoughts as the salt water breeze took them away. The blankets of snow, that I once knew, turned into white grains of sand that coated the steps of every shop and the bright green blades of grass were now blue curves of water that left me in a trance with every movement. Each house by the shore was painted a different bright color and was home to a collection of beach related trinkets, including broken shells, used as decor, and sand filled jars which were left by past visitors. A hammock was hung on the top story which became my safe haven of fresh air and solitude. Each morning I swung to the slow, crashing of the waves as the sun began to rise.…

The day seemed to drag on and on, as I waited, counting down the days to California. It was a humid, sunny afternoon down at the Alton pool, where I usually spend most of my summer days working as a lifeguard. Today was very different than most…. And maybe the reason why was because it was my last day of work before I flew off to the big L.A. Most days at the pool the time went by slower than any I have ever known, with the scorching hot sun burning my skin, and little kids yelling at their friends telling each other secrets or what they want to play next.…

During April of 2015, I stepped out of the car and onto the beach for the first time in Destin, Florida; the salty sea stung my nose as I breathed in a refreshing breath of briny air. The first step onto the sand was like a bed of blankets; soft and comfortable. The way the white sand glided onto my feet and squished between my toes felt like heaven. The waves were singing a delicate lullaby, pulling me closer to them. As I walk towards the ocean with the warm sand beneath my feet, the cold waves lap at my ankles, as if they want to take me away.…

Salty air, sunny skies and sand in-between my toes, there’s nothing like the beach in Galveston, Texas. No one ever expected it. No one knew, that, after already coming out of the World War just over two decades past, that the World War would have to be given the title “First” in front of its name because a second World War was about to happen, a worst war, filled with violence, atrocities, the only use of nuclear weapons and finally, the worst of them all, was the Holocaust. I was just a boy of 11 at the time. All I wanted was to eat and run around and make fun of my teachers with my friends, and for my family to be safe. Alas, it was not to be.…

Anna Maria Florida It was a hot, humid Sunday in Anna Maria Florida. We were going to the beach with the 3 other families that went with us. It was about a five minute walk from our house we rented to the beach, which really felt like five hours because I was really excited. Once we FINALLY got there my friends and I decided to take our shoes off and find a perfect spot in the white hot sand to set up of chairs and umbrella. We took our clothes off because our swim suits were underneath and sprinted to the clear blue ocean.…
