Even if the shelter does decide to continue to not adopt out Pit Bulls, there are other options than euthanization. For instance, there are numerous rescue centers that will take in dogs deemed ‘vicious,’ like Pits Bulls, to keep them from being killed. One of these rescue centers is located in North Carolina. Fortitudine Vincimus Rescue Center, also known as “The Fort” was founded by Jake Gardner in 2012. According to Judi Brinegar’s article (2014), “Pit Bull Rescue Seeks Help,” “The Fort" is a nonprofit, no-kill rescue dedicated to alleviating the suffering of all animals, in particular the American Pit Bull Terrier”(Brinegar, para. 2). One of Gardner’s rescue dogs is a Pit Bull named Mack. Mack was a stray at a shelter that was going to be put down in a few days. When Gardner saw him, he knew he had to save him as well as the other dog he originally came for. One of these people was Mike Ossa Jr. Ossa adopted his Pit, Roscoe after returning home from his tour in Afghanistan. Since returning home, Ossa has struggled with depression and anxiety.
