The battering ram was a powerful medieval weapon used by attackers in order to pound upon and break down the walls, gates, and doors of castles. This weapon required a large amount of people and strength to move it efficiently, even as many as 100 soldiers in certain circumstances. It also needed a considerable amount of skill in order for all of the men to move as one rhythmic force, as well as with the proper swing and twist of the battering ram in order to be successful in breaking down the target. The battering ram was created using a large tree trunk, with a metal head fitted on top, with metal support bands on the sides. It was especially effective on gates and doors made of wood.
