When he finally asks Sheila out, she says yes. While they are in the canoe on their way to a concert, the narrator hooks a bass. He finds out Sheila Mant thinks fishing is dumb and will have to make a choice between the girl and the fish. In this journal, I will be predicting and connecting.

Living Downstream by Sandra Steingraber illustrates the vast effects of environmental pollutants on the human body. As a biologist and cancer survivor, Sandra Steingraber is able to eloquently execute this story because the topic is so relatable to her life. The strong association and correlation between the environment and our DNA shows so much about the ignorance of the human population and our stupidity of not acting to make a change. Although we are at fault for placing these chemicals into the environment, we still blame our faulty genetic repair mechanisms for the cancer instead of the environmental carcinogens that we’ve put into the land, the air and the water.…

Perfectly sums up how much he actually does want to go fishing but knows his son would rather go fishing with his friend. Later in the passage, Trumbo gives the reader a summary of how much the father’s fishing rod meant to him. In a way, the rod acts as a parallel to the loving relationship the father and son have because of how the reader knows that ‘each summer’ they go on a fishing trip and ‘each spring’ his father gets the rod cleaned up. In doing so, Trumbo implies that the break in the tradition is the equivalent to changing the close bond they had. The father ends up giving his ‘treasured’ fishing rod to his son in the same way he gave him his love as a father.…

This idea is supported by the frequented use of self-address implemented in the second half. The speaker becomes more involved. “I thought,” “I looked,” “I admired,” all produce a more active role on the part of the speaker. The turning point in the poem that triggers this alteration seems to be when the reader realizes that the fish is in fact still alive. “While his gills were breathing” (line 22) is the first action given to the fish and the first time he is addressed as a living thing.…

However, as the story unfolds, Thornhill shifts to be conveyed as more of a greedy thief and dispossessor of other people who thinks more about himself rather than his family despite having his own opinion on what he thinks is right for his family.
