Wetherell the narrator shows insecurity while he makes odd decisions for a girl. One example of how the narrator is insecure is when he cuts the fishing line because Sheila thinks fishing is dumb. According to the story “I think fishing is dumb.” She said making a face, “I mean, it's boring and all, definitely dumb.” (Wetherell Pg.3) The narrator LOVES to fish. According to what Sheila said, she thinks that fishing is dumb. After the narrator heard that, he acted like he did not like fishing as well. The narrator doesn't want Sheila to think he is weird. Another example when the narrator is showing insecurity is when he asked Sheila Mant out. He popped out of the woods thinking “Sheila is going to say no, I look as bashful and frightened as a unicorn.” (Wetherell Pg.1) The narrator is acting very insecure. His mind just kept telling him that she was going to say no. He compares himself to a unicorn at this point. He has gotten out of his mind!
