Computer Engineering Personal Statement

This past year learning the basics of computer engineering has been quite an enlightening experience. There are many possibilities and job opportunities related to this major. When I first came to CSULB I was unsure of what to expect. I had a pretty closed view of what was possible and what I could do as a computer engineer. Now that I have explored some realms, I am further unsure of what it is that I want to do. This is not because I do not like what I’m studying, but because I am fascinated by all the possibilities. One area field that really interested me was the home automation field. This was due to, in part, because one of my professors is a CTO (Chief Technology Officer) at a home automation company called SmartLabs. I remember that in the first days of class he showed us just a glimpse of what he worked in. With his phone, he was able to monitor his house. I am not quite sure yet what it is that I can do there as a computer engineer but I would surely like to find out. My goal is to someday work for a big car company such as Mercedes Benz or BMW. There are many different career paths that can be taken as a computer engineer/scientist. Each one of these choices pits you with a number of challenges that must be overcome before you can be successful. The biggest challenge for many engineers is the barrier of communication. I have seen that many in this major are introverted and lack the ability to eloquently and confidently discuss any topic. If this obstacle can be overcome, then any career choice is achievable. This paper has helped me realize that I still have a long way to go before I can decide what it is exactly that I want to do with my major. I am, however, optimistic about the plethora of opportunities that are out there for myself and my peers. The world has never been a brighter
