The Basics of Becoming and Being an Elementary School Teacher An ancient Proverb once said, “in teaching others, we teach ourselves;” for example when a teacher explains a lesson that children can take with them later on in life. An elementary teacher instructs children on the subjects that they need in order to further their education. It is also important for the teacher to improve their emotional development in the classroom. Most if not all colleges have the degree that a kindergarten teacher needs. This connects with the social perceptiveness or the awareness “of people 's reaction and knowing why they react as they do” and that is important because teachers need to know how to react to each student in their class (Elementary School Teacher Job 13). Another skill elementary school teachers need is being able to judge what is right and wrong in the situation and making decisions. Some children want to fight and argue and if a teacher is on duty they have to split the students up and decide who was right and wrong. The elementary teacher also has to make a decision about sending a note home or sending the child to the principal 's office. Along with arguments at school, kindergarten teachers need to decide if students should stay in kindergarten or advance to the first grade. Children struggle with phonics, which is sounding and saying letters and words in order to read so if the student does not meet the requirements that they should, especially with common core, then they will most likely remain in kindergarten. Elementary teachers also need to have the skills of “mathematics, science, writing, reading comprehension, and critical thinking” (Elementary School Teacher Job 6). If the teacher did not possess these crucial skills for teaching then
