The Basement Of The Ivory Tower Analysis

For years’ parents have told their kids that college is a must and that you have to do it, but in The Basement of the Ivory Tower has another thought about that. Which is Professor X that explain why he feels that college is not for everyone and shares his experience of teaching people that are just not ready for that level yet. So an individual might ask themselves am I that student, or is it really that necessary to go to college just too higher myself and in reality its getting me more in debt; on top of that what if I fail and I have to retake the class and pay for it what happens then? All these questions are what we need to think about because these are very important believe it or not.

L was an older lady in her 40’s that was not good at computers- so he knew that she was going to be trouble. So when Professor X told his students about the paper in the lab and she was the only one that was completely like a dinosaur when coming to computer skills. She didn’t know a lot of things about the computer; for example, she didn’t know that when the link is blue that you suppose to click on it. She also had trouble with her topic which she changed several times- until she thought about gun control so she asked Professor X was it okay. Professor X agreed that it would be okay to do, but do not talk about the pros and cons of gun control. So even though she said she wasn’t going to talk about the pro’s and con’s she did anyways. So when she turned in her paper he gave her an F, but Ms. L didn’t understand why she got that grade because she was so proud of that paper she did. Although, professor X knew why he gave Ms. L that grade he still felt really bad about it so when he was at home that all he could think about. He even thought about changing her grade to a C but then he was like what about the other students that work hard for their grade what then. So he felt like that would be unfair, so he decided against giving her a C even through it bothered him …show more content…
This is wrong because just because he felt that way don’t mean he wasn’t getting through to her. Meaning he don’t know what was going through her head because things are not always what they seem which made him go to defeats when he was writing this article. Where he tried to make himself feel better about his choice by saying all teacher know the wall of defeat basically. Most people know he was trying to protect his own behind so he wouldn’t look bad. So this a major reason why he couldn’t sleep that night.
Even through, picking the topic was part of the assignment he could of still of gave examples which would gave her a push in the right direction. Or to make it fair he could of gave all the students examples so everyone could have had the same advice that Ms. L had if it came down to it. It was so much things he could have done that could help her and the rest of the students because more than likely she wasn’t the only person that got an F on the assignment. This makes everyone wonder why was she the only one targeted in this article. So this was another reason why he couldn’t sleep.
Overall professor X is a good teacher by pushing them to their limits, but he needs to work on helping those that need that push. Also need to stop judging someone before really getting to know that person. Even though he was right it still not right in any circumstance
