On the afternoon Al had arrived at the store, he noticed that Slade never made it at all, more than an hour pass and an old freighter Moore had come into the store. Trying to get warm then said, “your new man’s dead, baumer” in a not pleasantly way, which says it on page 10 in the story. Mr. baumer couldn’t believe at first, he knew slade wouldn’t just freeze like that he didn’t even want to the wagon wheel to see slade for himself. That’s throwing out hints that something is going on that Mr. baumer is guilty of something he did. Which Al actually had decided to see slade his saw him and said, “his face was whiter than I ever saw it, whiter and deader, too, even though it never had been lively.” At last they went outside and Baumer ask Al to get a couple of lanterns to unload the wagon. But as Al saw in the wagon a barrel was one of the last things to go in. Al was curious about it but changed the subject for a while and ask Mr. baumer if all the merchandise would be sold. And baumer responded “sure we sell it, I get it cheap.” And that’s when Al decided to look at the barrel again and saw that it had big letters that said, “Wood Alcohol-Deadly Poison”. AL saw the mist in Baumers' eyes, as he repeated to him Al, is good to know how to read.
