After that comment, right after she gave up playing coy she could have ended up identifying herself as being a part of the out group as evident how the poem states at the end, “She went to and fro apologizing…Her good nature wore out…To every woman a happy ending”. The fact that she could have started to identify herself as being a part of the out group shows that the classmates comment threatened her social identity ultimately, leading her to behavioral change. In social categorization, we categorize objects in order to understand them and identify them. The second stage is social identification where we adopt the identity of the group we have categorized ourselves as belonging to. The final stage is social comparisons which are once we have identified ourselves as part of a group; we then tend to compare that group with other groups. This is the example of how we socially identify each other, which in the end can lead to total behavioral change. In similarity to society, the girl changed her behavior as a way of strategically coping to her social identity being threatened. Changes in her behavior such as exercising, dieting, smiling and wheedling, altogether playing coy led to her good nature wearing out resulting in the girl to cut off her nose and her legs.
