The Banking Concept of Creativity A narrator tells a story, a story about something they experienced or are familiar with, but the narrator never allows anyone to add input into the story, and that takes away from creativity. The “Banking Concept of Education” by Paulo Freire portrays the illustration of the teacher being the narrator and the student being the patient. I believe that this relationship is uninspiring and unrealistic. Students spend the majority of their adolescent years in school listening, memorizing, and testing all to get into a good college and get the perfect job, but that is idealistic. Growing up in a very traditional town with traditional schools and teachers, I was always expected to read the textbook, take notes, then take a test, but this never worked. I have lived with a learning disability all of my academic life, so the traditional way doesn’t always work for me. Reading is one of the most challenging activities for me because the letters move around and the words don’t make sense, leaving me confused and frustrated. I have found that when I have the ability to be creative with my learning and express my knowledge in a verbal or visual way, I am so much more successful. Although school may be more challenging for me because I have difficulty retaining information from a lecture, I am still able to show my knowledge through creative …show more content…
Depositing material is necessary to give the student the information they need to know about the subject, but only allowing the students to absorb facts and not think and wonder is irresponsible. The teacher’s need to deliver information to the students to learn and understand, but then it is up to the students to decide what they are going to do with that information. They can memorize and regurgitate it on the next test or they can think and develop ideas that will push them to ask questions and generate opinions. The teacher’s job is to guide the questions, understand the opinions and learn from the inquiring students. When a teacher stands in front of the classroom and speaks at the students, students become bored and uninterested about the subject, which is a missed opportunity to learn and change
