The Baltimore Honfest Analysis

Decent Essays
The Baltimore Hons are the knees of the bees. "Hon" is standard Charm City vernacular short for honey; residents pepper it in much like Southerns do y'all. As in "Hey Hon, are we gonna pick some crabs tomorrow?" The beloved term belongs to everyone, but is owned by no one.

Just ask the Hampden restaurant owner who attempted to trademark those three letters; the locals responded with the inevitable "Off with her head." The Hons are revered all year round, but they do have a special holiday set aside just for them: The HonFest. Party goers at the Fest don their best cat eye glasses and stiff beehives. There are animal prints and feather boas as far as the eye can see. The event is a lollapalooza of kitsch fit for a John Waters- esque king.

What happens in the bleachers is that all the old football players talk about their greatest memories. This helps because it breaks the ice for other football players from different times to get to know one another. And maybe to get a few things off his chest such as “fifty thousand bucks in cash” which was offered to Neely to go to Tech this needed to be said a long time ago. This contributes to Neely’s recovery because he is surrounded by old Spartan football players and some of his close friends in high school. Also Neely can catch up to where everyone is and what everyone is doing.…

He uses people and their behaviors to better guess the terrain he presently occupies, he will even go so far to describe smells that can be found in certain places in Brooklyn. The imagery of this quote drew me in. The vivid colors described creates a picture of a basic football field, maybe even similar to our turf at Colby-Sawyer. Bissinger draws this beautiful picture of a calm stadium, painted with the colors of competition, but then he throws in the portion of the text describing Boobie’s exit as an injured player off the field. The addition of Boobie’s exit to the beautiful scene Bissinger writes us adds more feeling for me as a reader. The text shows how odd it is to see Boobie on the sidelines and not playing in the game.…
