The Ball Field-Personal Narrative

As I get off the bus, and stretch my legs after what seemed like a very long bus ride, I noticed a certain smell in the air. I have been here before, and each time the visits have been very uncomfortable. I love nothing more than to step on the ball field, and smell the fresh cut grass, and my kangaroo skin catchers glove. This ball field was different, for many different reasons.

Playing baseball against Mountain Valley was always fun, because we always won. We traveled to their field this spring and I could not wait to leave. First off, the fans were as crazy as a jungle during lunch hours. Win or lose, the fans would always complain and put down the opposing which happened to be us that day. As the catcher of the team, I am involved in every pitch. The pitcher, and my close friend threw a pitch to my glove as it seemed to be going as fast as a race car. The batter struck out, and the zoo animals behind me growl, and screech as though it was our fault.

As the game continued, the sky was getting darker. Before to

It was 9PM and had a trip that felt as though we were jumping states. Us captains stay after, while the rest of the team scurried to the bus. Our coach looks at us with grin, and kind of disappointed. I asked coach why he seemed down, and he told us “ I do not enjoy coming to this ball field, and I know you guys don’t as well. Thank you for being strong leaders, and putting all the negativity behind. You guys showed true sportsmanship.” This coach saw us as his children, and for him we are all grateful.

With everyone on the bus, and accounted for, I looked back into the steamy field as the lights turn off one by one. The once beautiful ball field looked like a graveyard, and I was glad to be going home. I love nothing more than to arrive home, and step off the bus to smell the air of home sweet home. Every ball field is different, for many different reasons. Ours was truly, and always will be the

To all the seniors that cared about me as an quiet incoming freshman, I owe them everything that I have accomplished this year. So, when they laid out on the field after conceding a PK in double overtime, I felt it my personal mission to help each and every one of them up and tell them about the great game that they had just played. The baseball field is where I spend most of my weekends and evenings with my family “cheering” on my brother. In reality, when I get there, I have parents waiting for me to watch over the younger siblings of the baseball players playing that day. One of my favorite memories from the field was when I handed the kid I was watching a package of gummy worms, and he looked up at me with his smile hidden under his chubby cheeks. When I was younger, I would always look up to teenagers because I felt that they had some sort of coolness since they were the “big kid.…

My high school varsity football team was my second family for three years and even longer because I had grown up with most of these guys. Throughout my high school career, they were there for me through hardships and struggles that came with being a student-athlete. My team was a normal group of guys who cared about each other and supported one another, but as high school football players, there are misconceptions that many people have including that we hate everyone on the football team and that we are all jocks.…

According to most people we had failed. My team and I had just lost our first game that season and everyone was frustrated. The game had been close and physical, but still we had played unusually well for ourselves. As we sat silently in the locker room waiting for our coach to come in I glanced around at my disappointed teammates. Sullen looks were painted across nearly every face and I even saw a few tears that were quickly brushed away.…

It was a perfect pass, and it went directly to me. With my tired looking knee pads, I sprinted halfway across the court to get the ball that is now descending from its highest point to the ground. Another four feet away from me and I know that if I do not get down on the floor then I will not have enough time to save the ball. Trying not to slam my knees too hard into the ground, I then get the ball just before it hits the ground. Now I finally hit the floor, and slam my side into the ground.…

Turner Field in Atlanta was not only home of the Braves, but a home to many baseball fans. The concessions and amenities for the fans, as well as the game of baseball are the most prominent observations I made as I entered the stadium on a Saturday afternoon. The Ball at my Feet “I learned all about life with a ball at my feet.” These are the words of Ronaldinho, Brazilian soccer player, infamous for his technical ability and footwork on the field. I particularly identify with Ronaldinho’s words because I have learned many valuable lessons from soccer, which I still carry with me to this day. My experiences with soccer have made me into an excellent candidate for the Terry Fox scholarship award; as they shaped me into a person who is resilient, a team player, and a person who can improve after failing.…

The Alice P. McDermott Academic Convocation Center is a gym at the center of the athletic department that is easily dismissed by the large amounts of people that pass by it on a daily basis. It’s a path that many students who live in the dorms on the hill, students and employees who park in the garage, or students and employees who enter from 281 or Hildebrand take every day on their way to the main campus. Because it is disregarded by busy people, it is a bit harder to notice that during certain times the area is very quiet and peaceful. By sitting down and in the midst of the action, it’s easy to analyze the sights, sounds, and smells that occur when all is hectic and when all is still. Every direction is a different sight filled with its own action.…
