This book explores one woman’s desire to find and live her life fully within her true self. Edna is devoted to the purpose even if it does cause friction and conflict between her family and friends. Edna Pontellier’s story begins to take place in the 1890’s Louisiana, her husband, two children and herself are vacationing for the summer on Grand Isle. They are staying at a pension which is like a boarding house where families have their own cottage, and eat together in a main dinning hall with other families. Another family that is staying at the pension is the Ratignolle family; Madame Ratignolle is a close friend of Edna’s, she is defined as a “mother-women” who is sacrificing herself to be devoted to care for her husband, children and household. The next character that comes along is Mademoiselle Reisz, who is described as a pianist she is also vacationing Grand Isle, even though Mademosielle Reisz often times offends others around her she becomes fond of Edna, and they become friends. Her first piano performance is what brings Edna into her awakening for the passion of music. She strips down to her birth day suite and goes skinny dipping. She swims out further than she has ever been before and ends up drowning. To conclusion there is no real hints that Edna had any motives to commit suicide and that question remains unanswered. There is a possibility that Edna did want to commit suicide, on account of everything that was going on in her life throughout her awakening, although on the other hand there 's always that question as to why she told her friends and family that she would be back, or even tell them where she as going. That is a question that may never be answered, through all the awakenings that Edna had gone through she did not realize the true thing that she needed to awake from was her own dream.
