The avian flu started in Italy in 1878. The disease wasn’t always called the avian flu though. After the disease started to spread more throughout Italy, they began to call it Fowl Plague. At this time, the disease had not yet reached the human population. Later on in 1955, it was discovered that Fowl Plague was being caused by a string of the influenza virus.
There are 3 different types of influenza : type A, type B & type C. All influenza viruses affecting domestic animals belong to type A, therefore the avian flu is type A. Type A influenza can also infect humans, not just animals and that was exactly the case with the avian flu.
In 1997, the disease soon reached humans in Hong Kong, China. Before this outbreak, the virus was unprecedented
