I am able to get involved in class and get one on one time if I don't get something that we are going over. Every teacher makes sure to tell me that there office hours and where to find them if not in the classroom. Personally it helps not having to much people in the class to interrupt the teacher and the teacher has more time to lecture about the topic. And with smaller classes I get to meet people and get to know them better as well as we get to share ideas as a ground and get to discuss things more closely.…

At Portland State, 51.7% of the classes contain 20 to 49 students (Portland State University). On the other hand, Harvard “has 74 percent of its classes with fewer than 20 students” (Harvard University). Over the past few years at Southridge High School, I found out that I learn best in a classroom that contains a variety of students to interact with because I love to hear numerous ideas. Portland State presents me the opportunity to interact with a variety of students due to its class size. In contrast, Harvard does not give me the opportunity to interact with a variety of students because their class sizes are smaller than Portland State.…

If we are truly interested in looking at what works and what does not work, all we have to do is look back to when smaller class sizes were introduced across the state, at all grade levels (but especially in elementary schools), and at all socio-economic levels (but most effective in low-income areas). Affluent parents pay out-of-pocket to send their children to schools (private or public) with smaller class sizes and more teacher interaction. They would never pay to have their child sit in front of a computer screen for so-called “personalized” instruction supervised by a low-paid classroom “technician,” but this is what is called for in much of the current “reform” movement (especially in charters). Small class size makes a great teacher…

Of the educational reform proposals mentioned in this chapter, I think the most effective one is creating smaller classes. Smaller class sizes would help students immensely.…

Considering the issues that many urban students face inside and outside of the classroom, these children may benefit more from smaller class sizes.
