Albeit, Francis Ford Coppola is the prime example of the auteur, his films are a reflection of his style of directing, and a direct reflection of his films. I selected “The Godfather,” though many of his films reflect a man of power. “The Godfather” out of concern for protecting his family desired absolute power and obtained it by any means necessary.
However, Pauline Kael disagreed with Andrew Sarris’s Auteur Theory, often feuding over reason giving the director almost total responsibility for a film’s success or failure. I agree the distinguishable personalities must coincide with the technical competence to give critics a fair range to judge. One without the other is pointless, and interior meaning would not matter as much since this
