Today I learned that when President Theodore Roosevelt's term was done became part of the national park system. He added five new parks and sparked the idea of the antiquities act.This enabled new presidents to make new landmarks and national monuments. President Roosevelt did not hesitate to use his power. he made four national landmarks including Devils Tower, Wyoming on September 24th. One of the parts that the park system made was The Augusta canal.

But then under the order of George W. Rains the country made the 28 powder works for two miles on the canal. A powermill is a factory that makes black powder ,a type of gunpowder. Then the entire military started using the augusta canal for bullets guns and metal. It became a critical supplier of the army. It seemed that Henry’s dream was coming to life.
The augusta canal was left in better condition than any other city in its side of the south. The population of the town had doubled and economy was huge. The manager ss of the canal said that they should enlarge the canal for water wheel power. They got to expand the canal in 1875.

Then the federal works progress was forced to send workers to repair all damages to equipment in the canals. Those workers were hired to build new Straightaways and to straighten the canal.
Then the city faced neglect in the next few decades. textile mills shut down and closed up shop so the Augusta Canal was almost forgotten. Economy was down and All industrial hope went to the south of the city with the factories that had Abandoned the city. Some officials considered drying the canal and using it for the Super Highway and a water source.
Small smoldering efforts begin to come up at the canal and it was made a landmark for its years of popularity. It Hadn't gained back its popularity but It's historic greatness brought a small amount of people back to the canal. All of the Mills we're also considered national landmarks later on and the canal was credited for them.
