On the day of the attack the bulk of the pacific fleet was in the harbor. This included 8 battleships, 9 cruiser, 29 destroyers, and 9 submarines (Ann Parish). The attack destroyed a large portion of the Pacific Fleet. Over 300 planes were damaged or completely destroyed and around 21 ships were either sunken, beach or destroyed during the attack. The battleships that took the most damage were the Arizona and the Oklahoma. The Oklahoma was hit by 5 torpedoes and then capsized, 429 men were lost off this ship. The Arizona was hit by one torpedo around 8:05 that morning and then was hit by 8 bombs and finally sunk.There was an estimated 1,177 men lost off the Arizona. Still to this day over 1,000 bodies remain on the ship at the bottom of harbor (Ann Parish). At the attack on Pearl Harbor there was a huge loss of life on that day. By 9:45 on the morning of the attack there were around 2,390 United States soldiers were dead and 1,178 were wounded. The battle of Pearl Harbor would mark the start of the war for the United States. Many American lives were lost that day at Pearl Harbor and was the one time the United States was caught off guard. The attack on Pearl Harbor lead the United States into war and in the end the U.S. finished the war. The Manhattan project paid off for the United States and in the end it saved the lives of countless Americans and also many Japanese
