Joseph McCarthy, a senator from Minnesota, became known for his widespread accusations of communists throughout the country. Many of these accusations were made towards people working in the government or those with a high public status. They were said to have been spies from the Soviet Union that were working for the United State’s government agencies. This put people in fear of what was going on within the government; they thought they were being spied on and tracked by government officials. Joseph McCarthy even claimed “he had a list of 205 people in the State Department who were known members of the American Communist Party” (Oh and Latham). This terrified the country and made citizens question their safety. If communists overthrew the government, citizens would have no say so in anything. They would be controlled and tracked for everything they did. This is not what America was or is about. The nation should not be afraid of the religion itself, but of the radicals and extremists who go as far as killing people. It is part of the Islamic religion to die a martyr, but some take it to the extreme and kill others as well. A few of the terrorist groups that involve these radicals and extremists include Al Qaeda, the Taliban, and the most recent and rapidly growing which is the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria
