Chapter one opens with a background on what the current time and situation was in Hiroshima, Japan. The start of something so horrific that would impact the lives of an entire nation. The atomic bomb that was dropped early morning on August 6, 1945 would affect the lives of the six individuals that the story revolves around. These six individuals are only miles away from each other but survive due to chance, fate, and quick decisions. The first person we meet is Reverend Kiyoshi Tanimoto he is a methodist minister who is moving his daughter’s belongings through the city in an area called Koi. He then seen a very bright light travel from east to west. He ran to hide under a rock and didn 't look up. But he felt the pressure and splinters and tiles that fell on him. He wakes at 3am in the morning to do housework for the family. At 7am she leaves to her job at East Asia Tin Works where she is a clerk. After talking to the girl next to her, her room is filled with a blinding light and everything from above cam crashing down. Ceilings and books fell around her crushing her leg and she is paralyzed by fear. Chapter two focuses on the immediate response of the six people described in the first chapter. Mr. Tanimoto leaves his estate in a hurry and begins to help an old lady and the child who seem to be hurt. He reached the mound to see a panorama of the the city in ruins. A thick could of dust had covered everything. After looking around he thought of his family and quickly began to run towards them in the city. Mrs. Nakamura is struggling to get of her house and find her children. She found the children filthy and bruised and in their underwear. She looks around for pants and shirts and quickly dresses her kids irrationally. A neighbor asks her to run away to the Asano Park by the Kyo River with her children. The main characters introduced to me were civilians, both rich and poor, who did nothing wrong.
