Most people choose to use Facebook as a means to stay connected with friends from all over and from years long past. “It’s just kind of a way of hanging on to some of those connections.” 1 We want to feel like what happens through the course of our interactions have meanings and can be something tangible or measurable. The friends list gives us a way to measure the contacts that we have. It is easy to find yourself surrounded by people you don’t want to hear from on Facebook. This brings us to trimming friends on Facebook can lead to a more fulfilling use of the network.2 Through Unfriending you can get to your “core” friends and hopefully experience meaningful interactions. The issue this can cause is the loss of personal touches, if you are inviting someone to a party versus a wedding it all comes up looking the same when you find it through Facebook. With blanket coverage it also finds people that don’t care to be invited or that are even wanting to be invited to be caught in there. Facebook can also be a place where people find a need to show everyone who they want to be perceived as. You can make yourself appear active or wealthy, without even thinking of it. You may post photos of the concert that you and your friends went to last week to be a reminder of a good time.
