The Atlantis Table Analysis

"Nearly all the sensible designs have been done before”, said Christopher Duffy to Sarah Fox in an interview with ACHICA magazine (Duffy). This one statement truly sums up what I love about design and how imagination can push the boundaries. Bold designs can be created that people connect to in different ways. The Atlantis Table is just one of the works designed by Christopher Duffy that is fresh, fun, and full of life. Not only that, it exhibits the functionality and realness behind design that requires more technical than creative skills to produce a work that both has an ability to function practically, but also gives that “wow” factor that can allow you to be somewhere else entirely, when actually you are just sitting in a building or room. This successful piece of work in Christopher Duffy’s Abyss Table collection resonates with me due to its one of a kind quality, functionality, behind- the-scenes engineering, and, above all, its ability to transcend a single form. …show more content…
His designs are functional, handcrafted, imagination driven, and draw on concepts such as illusion. The Atlantis Table appeals to Christopher Duffy’s ethos because it’s an outstanding example of every attribute I stated above by exposing his designs worthiness to be admired and sought after, as well as, showing his character and credentials as a talented designer. The Atlantis Table is the only one of its kind, which classifies it as a work of art. This is much different than a piece of furniture that is more indicative of a fad or trend, and instead a valued design piece that is timeless and personal to the owner. Christopher Duffy has taken his idea of the Atlantis Table and designed it to be a collected piece of art that will be owned by a person who sees the depth, beauty, and who will truly enjoy it for all the nuisances and work that went behind creating

The installation leads me to the next story where the exhibitions are on display. I follow the rope to the second floor which exhibits Ida Applebroog’s series Catastrophe with its colors contrasting against blank plaster walls. Each individual piece is drawn on five by two-and-half feet mylar sheets. These have a cream color and are translucent with a matte finish. Applebroog’s consistent style involves simple, curvilinear figures that resemble the abstraction often seen in children sketches.…

Like a permanent marker, the Byzantine Empire dried up over time, but still left marks on our world which will be there forever. In 323 CE, an emperor by the name of Constantine gained control of the Roman Empire and made two incredible changes that drastically changed it for the rest of its time. Constantine legalized the Christian religion and moved the capital of Rome to Byzantine, now known as Istanbul. Other incredible emperors, such as Justinian, were famous for writing "Justinian's Code". Throughout the course of its existence, the Byzantine Empire constantly expanded and collapsed, until it finally ended for good in 1453.…

Through All Evil, There is A Light: Sacrifice “If you don’t SACRIFICE for what you want, what you want becomes the SACRIFICE” -Unknown. Agriculture and human sacrifice were major parts of the Aztec Empire’s history; from their amazing inventions for farming to how they worshiped their gods, this impacted how historians wrote Aztec history. Both influenced the empire equally and stood out as the unique factors of the Aztecs’ thriving civilization. Although the Aztecs had great advances toward agriculture, human sacrifice should be further emphasized, due to the many hidden facts to why and the intentions of the Aztecs to perform these horrid rituals.…

From Josef Müller-Brockmann to Armin Hofmann The grid philosophy in Swiss Style Introduction Swiss graphic design won a great reputation all over the world. It 's intense conceptual approach, ceremonial concentration, and high accuracy in the realisation of the design which formed a distinctive style in that period (Brandle, Gimmi, Junod, Reble, Richter 2014). Josef Müller-Brockmann as a leading pioneer of the Swiss Style played an important role in that time. Particularly, his manifesto grid and design philosophy published in Grid systems in graphic design were followed by a number of designers up to now. In the manifesto he talked about the significant statue grids are in the design and the advantages they bring to the society.…

Dallas Museum of Art In my opinion, the overall structure of the Dallas Museum of Art offers numerous places for guests to admire different forms of art within contiguous spaces. I find these vantage points to be the museum’s most unexpected properties and my recommended route passes three of them. I had the luxury of spending my afternoon at the Dallas Museum of Art over the weekend, and I spent quite a while moving slowly around the William Wetmore Story marble sculpture of Semiramis. She is a stunning work, engraved out of a single block of marble, and as I moved around her, I thought to myself, “Great art is a wonderful reason to believe in God.”…

Atlantis: The Lost Empire is a film made by Disney in 2001, and it shows the journey of Milo Thatch, a cartographer, linguist and an expert in almost all things Atlantean. He, with a group of mismatched peers, including a expert in engines, and one in demolition, a geologist and a medical officer, set off to find the ruins of Atlantis, a country that to be only a legend since it was swept away by a flood, and they are going to prove it really once existed. Most of the group, unbeknownst to Milo, are after a seemingly infinite power source that was foretold in many of the different depictions of Atlantis. They decide to steal the power source, to exploit the resources of the land and to recover any gold they can. In the film, it draws on many…

He is best known for the Thomas Lourds series of novels that has four titles of which the first, The Atlantis Code is the most popular. He began researching the first novel when he saw an article about the ancient lost city of Atlantis in a scholarly journal that utterly fascinated him. When thinking about history what's the first thing that one thinks about? While most think of history as a black and white story of conquests and wars, there are a few historians who focus on looking over the history of food. Felipe Hernan-Armesto believes that though cooking is a relatively new innovation for humankind, it can still be traced back even further depending on what one considers cooking. Based on Armesto’s first chapter in his book Near A Thousand Tables one can agree with his ideas of how cooking is not just useful but has had a huge impact on our culture. The Invention of cooking has been instrumental in affecting our culture for many reasons, one such reason being that it allowed groups of people to socialize, it also created…

    Marshmallow Sofa Analysis

For this assignment, I chose the Marshmallow Love Seat #5670, or more commonly known as the Marshmallow sofa. This specific piece came from the Modernism movement and was produced by the American furniture company Herman Miller that was originally manufactured between 1956 and 1961. It is considered the most iconic of all modernist sofas (Fleisher 2009). It was produced in two sizes from 1956 to 1961, and consists of a metal chromatic frame with round discs of covered foam, a sustainable and conservative way to incorporate different materials to create an effective furniture piece. It was so effective, in fact, that in the smaller of the two sizes it was produced in, it was re-issued in the 1980s as part of the "Herman Miller Classics" line, and continues in production today.…
