The meeting place in Athens is a very open square, use is also diversified. According to the provisions of the day, the square will be used to hold different events. Such as for elections, theatrical performances, religious processions, markets or sports competitions. The Agora began its history as the heart of economic, cultural and political religion of Athens in the beginning of the 6th BCE, and the whole square is surrounded by public buildings needed for the government in Athens.
There have some main builds I will introduce about below. First is The Region of Herms is named after a mythical hero which mixing of commerce and religion, the top of the building has a male head sculpture as a decoration. This building are located at the entrance of the open square, The Royal Stoa at left and the Painted Stoa at upper right, looking northwest. The word “Herms” in ancient Greek means market, it used for storage and distribution of grain and wheat, it also leased land maintained by tenant. Because for the ancient Greek the meaning of shrine are so different and is a very serious thing for their religious spirit. Before the open square used for Agora, the Mycenaean and Geometric peoples are use this area as a burial ground. Thus, During the Archaic and Classical periods when the Athenians move in and discovered, they often honored the dead as ancestral heroes. Therefore they honor to the heroized dead took the form of a votive pit, surrounded by boundary stones or a wall and became the cult place of the identified hero. Is not must be necessary to put in the dead body, there may be some of the items related to this person. And then, people will go worship in their own hero
