Essay On First Year Experience

Improved Essays
At the third Performing Arts Center (PAC) session for First Year Experience students, the people on the panel related how their majors/fields of interest influenced how they viewed the world around them. They also related the ways in which their fields of expertise could be used to promote and/or understand sustainability. In this essay I will attempt to relate how my own interests influence my world view and how my interests can be applied to sustainability. The PAC session was very thought provoking.
At the PAC session the panel explained how their majors/fields of interest could be related to sustainability. Personally, I have a curiosity in most subjects, however my major interests are in the arts. I am particularly in writing and the visual arts, although I have a passion for music as well.

If I am given a relatively straight forwards question, I try to answer it in the most unexpected way—often the opposite of what the question is asking. I like to make people think, to force them to look at things in a completely different way. The people may not agree with the train of thought (sometimes even I do not agree with my own obscure thoughts), but they have to acknowledge it. For example, in the spring I competed in an annual pageant in the village where I live. The competitors were posed the question ‘What would you attempt if you knew you could not fail?’ I spent weeks contemplating how best to answer this question. In the end I decide that if I could not fail, I would attempt to fail at anything and everything. If failure was impossible, then it became the greatest challenge. I also disagreed with the notion that failure should be avoided. I did not answer the question in the way the pageant organizers intended it to be answered, but my answer was still valid. When I look at things, I try to see the unexpected, what no one else bothers to

Last semester was definitely the hardest for me. I have two challenging research papers toward the end of the semester. I find it hard because I did not know what to write about and which assignments I should start on first. I manage to overcome this challenge by narrowing the topics and start on the paper that was closest to deadline. My stress level was at 10 because I skip meals and stayed up all night long to finish my papers.…

As students there are various elements that affect our educational experiences. Factors such as race, gender, class, power and privilege have shaped our thoughts and views on school and learning. Race has greatly influenced my experiences in school as well as in society. Through the analysis of my own experiences I have a clearer understanding of the effects of these categories, especially race and its impact in educational settings. My experiences as a student have impacted my perceptions of teaching and have taught me some key techniques I would need to incorporate in my own classroom with my students.…

Failure is the act or instance of failing or proving unsuccessful. When someone fails at something it often makes them feel discouraged or apprehensive, but I have learned to look at failure differently. Failure to me is an opportunity. Freshman and sophomore year are years you feel like you are invincible and also have a hard headed mind set, especially when you’ve been in varsity sport since freshman year. None of those ways of thinking and feeling help you do well in school or distinguish the real important things from the not so important things. My summer of sophomore year I tore my ACL during a game for my club team. I, being this stubborn sixteen year old teenager thought I would recover from the injury quick and be that “stud” from freshman year but turned out way different than I planned. Laying on my bed not able to do a single exercise or touch a ball left to right, my thoughts started to become really dark thoughts.…

I didn’t not know what I was expecting. On the first day of high school, I stepped into a crowd of students, waiting to enter the building that would become my second home for the next four years. I didn’ not know where I would stand among these highly accomplished individuals, or if I would even amount to the standards set before me. Self-doubt began to fester inside of me as soon as I stepped through the front doors. I expected less and less of myself as time went on.…

Short shorts. Short shorts as far as the eye can see. This is what I saw all over ETSU’s beautiful campus as I went one day without my cell phone. Initially, I thought nothing much would come out of the seemingly uninteresting assignment, but I was mistaken. It proved to be an eye-opening day, mostly because I saw how much students were on their phones, I learned that I am terrible at telling time, and I can now cope with my social anxiety instead of jumping to my phone.…
