Grade 1 Classroom Observation

On Thursday September 22, 2016 I had the opportunity to observe Mrs. Breen’s’ 16 student grade one class at Orange City Christian School for an hour in the afternoon. When I arrived in the classroom the students were just completing their silent reading time. After that there was story time where Mrs. Breen read the students a story about flat Stanley. After reading time the grade one class moved on to their bible lesson. While I was there she asked many questions and the students were all very engaged. The environment of the classroom was quiet, calm and organized. Orange City Christian is a Christian school and this was evident in this grade one classroom. The classroom is set up with different sections, the sections were mainly a story mat, desks, a cozy reading area and a group table. Other techniques that Mrs. Breen used was the pulling of names on popsicle sticks to call on students, not just the ones that were raising their hands. Another management technique that was used was a “brain break” where a few students chose a short activity to do to help the students refocus in a fun, physical way. Breen’s efforts to teach Christianly she faces the obstacles of having to deal with her own personal sins and past experiences. Some advice that she gave to Karli on enhancing student motivation for learning is to build relationships with students and the student’s family to build a solid trust foundation to let them know that it is a safe environment. She encourages that a teacher gets to know information about the student as they can. Some classroom management skills techniques that work well in Mrs. Breen’s classroom is the way that it is set up with different areas of specialization. She also uses different ‘attention getters’ such as clapping or a bell because she prefers not to raise her
