An alliance is a union or association formed for mutual benefits; it is usually a bond between two or more countries. The reason the war got so big in the first place was because when Serbia and Austrio – Hungary signed a declaration for war, many more countries were obligated to get involved. Serbia was in a Slavic alliance with Russia and Austrio – Hungary was in alliance with Germany. So just by declaring a war against Serbia, Russia and Germany were also involved in the war. Russia mobilized their 5,000,000 troops a day after the war was signed, July 29th 1914. On August 1st, Germany mobilized their soldiers. Even though Russia mobilized their soldiers first and had many more soldiers, Germany was still more advanced with their technology. Germany had enough munitions for every soldier. Russia only had one gun for every three soldiers; when one soldier died, another would come into war carrying that gun. Because of this, Russia just barely had two million soldiers, while Germany had almost three million soldiers, with modern and proper equipment. Germany’s tactic to win the war was to invade France. The United States was not planning to get involved with the war. Their president Woodrow Wilson wanted the world to be safe and end war; he wanted to employ the idea of the League of Nations. The League of Nations was an organization that was put together to solve country disputes. The organization later ended World War I. Wilson’s ideas led the US into not getting involved in the war, in the beginning. Two main events led the United States into World War I, were the sinking of the Lusitania and the telegram sent to Mexico. The US and Great Britain had a small alliance and even though the US was not in the war, they still sent supplies over to Britain. This is not what the Germans wanted. It was their plan to block off all supplies that were being imported to Britain, so they blocked the seas with their boats and U-Boats. Before the US entered the war, a boat called the Lusitania was bound to set off from New York. There were many notices all around saying that the Lusitania was a targeted ship and that it would be a risky trip, but no one listened to the warnings, not realizing the severity. The captain, William Turner, sought of a strategic plan of travelling through the Atlantic Ocean in a zig-zag formation. Which Germany could have thought was suspicious.
