Throughout the reign of King Humbert I of Italy, there were two major assassination attempts on his life, with one being successful. King Humbert had the reputation of loath and hatred by his enemies, all while gaining the nickname of “The Good One” by his loyal followers. “King Humbert succeeded the throne on the death of his father, January 9, 1878, and during his reign the kingdom has grown prosperous and political parties have crystalized so that it is now considered to be a stronger footing than ever before.” King Humbert married his first cousin, Margherita Teresa Giovanna, Princess of Savoy.
