The Bolshevik Revolution was a time of chaos, betrayal and homicide in Russia. The Life of the royal family, the Romanovs, changed drastically. The people of Russia wanted to overthrow the monarchy. Tsar Nicholas II and his family were taken to a location in Yekaterinburg where they would be protected, nonetheless, on the night of July 17th, 1918 the family was assassinated by a group of rebels.
After the assassination of Tsar Nicholas II and his family it was discovered that two of his children’s bodies were gone. Anna Anderson tried to commit suicide in Germany by jumping off a bridge into a canal, she was saved and sent to a mental institution called “Mommsen”. Anna Anderson first claimed that she was Anastasia Romanov in 1920s and continued to say this until the day she died in 1984. Anna Anderson had many supporters and a numerous amount of people firmly believed that she was the lost duchess. There is a large variety of evidence linking the grand duchess Anastasia and Anna Anderson. This leads to the question was Anna Anderson merely insane, did she want the lavish lifestyle of a royal duchess or was she truthfully Anastasia?
When Anna Anderson was first found in Berlin she had no form of identification and no one claimed to know her. Anna Anderson at no time left the protagonist of being the Grand Duchess. Anna Anderson stated that her strange and possibly insane behaviour in the metal institute, such as not talking, crying, and cowering under her bed covers was just a result of the traumatic experience she had been through during the assassination. Maria Rusputain took back her statement that Anna Anderson was Anastasia shortly after Anna Anderson rebuffed the name of Anastasia Romanov, she then said she felt Anna Anderson’s stories were fabricated. Anastasias old drama teacher implied that Anna Anderson was a maven and stated that she was a tremendous actress. Anastasia‘s aunt Ogla expressed that she had great hope that her niece had survived and Ogla arrived in Berlin open-minded, nevertheless, once she saw Anna Anderson she stated that she knew she “was looking at a stranger” and that she “left Berlin with all hope extinguished”.
Moreover when Anna Anderson arrived in Mommsen many people told her that she looked strikingly similar to Tsars Nicholas’s eldest daughter Tatiana. It is likely that this may have sparked the idea in Anna Andersons mind claim that she was not Tatiana but Anastasia Romanov. This statement was somewhat believable because before the inmates had stated the similarity Anna Anderson had not
