Would you ever do something without getting something in return? If so, will you do it to the best of your capabilities? If you had to run a mile in a minute for $5, wouldn’t you try harder if you were offered $10? People who have experienced a great deal of success are described as ‘driven’. Your drive is what motivates you to do the things you do, and persuade you into taking risks. The thing is, we can not assume a person is only motivated by one thing. We also can’t assume that a person will succeed without a certain kind of motivation. Life is boring, so what is the point of living. My experience with motivation coming to me at the last minute coincides with my grandma’s experiences as well. My grandma did not always think that moving to Canada was a good idea. Back in Sri Lanka, my grandmother did not have enough money to advance her children's education to the fullest of their abilities. She thought about investing all her money and moving away to Canada but did not think it was worth it. In 1983, a civil war broke out in Sri Lanka between the Tamil people and the Sinhalese people over equality and human rights. Due to the massive amount of casualties and danger my grandma finally decided enough was enough and moved to Canada. My 3 uncles moved to Canada first and once they settled they sponsored the rest of my family. Without the motivation that the war gave my grandmother, she would not have left Sri Lanka and her children wouldn’t have been as successful. “I am proud that I can confidently say that I made the right decision about moving to Canada...I knew from the start that this was what our family needed”(Thambiayah). Without motivation it is impossible to succeed. Motivation allows you to stop asking questions and aligns you to work toward your goals.
