The ASCA National Model themes are divided into four different categories: leadership, collaboration, advocacy and systemic change. The leadership component describes the counselor as being an advocate for change. School counselors provide equitable services and programs for all students. Whether at the elementary, middle or high school level, all school counselors have the ability to lead. Effective school counselor leadership requires:
• visionary thinking
• challenging inequities
• shared decision making
• collaborative processing
• modeling excellence
• a courageous stance (Young, 2012).
School counselors play a vital role in setting the school environment. In order to do so, counselors must work collaboratively with the stakeholders within in the school and outside in the community. Although the school principal may serve as the head of the school and ultimately be responsible for student success, the school counselor plays a critical role in making student success a reality (Kinney, 2012). For example, counselors may be responsible for creating an annual agreement, organize and facilitate advisory council meetings, develop action plans and develop the program calendar. Mrs. Hubbert has used action plans for numerous students and small group settings. For example, Mrs. Hubbert works with a group of third grade boys that need additional help with conflict resolution skills. She also is able to work with numerous grade levels during their specials to conduct guidance lessons. Areas that need to be reviewed for this section is that she is not on the advisory council for the school which is an important part of improving the school community. Also, there was not a use-of-time assessment completed for this current school
