Time to Reinvent Formal Education Is it finally time to reinvent formal education in America? For centuries formal education in this country have been based on hierarchy, standardization and the system of “one-size-fits-all”. This form of education also prioritizes expertise and specialization while ignoring the obvious benefits of crowdsourcing. While this form of education might help some students, it also puts students who have a difficult time with standardized tests at risk of failing or dropping out of school. In the article “Project Classroom Makeover” by Cathy Davidson, the author discusses with the readers the current education system and its inability to reach the today’s generation of students due to it’s sole reliance on traditional and outdated curriculum. She also proves the effectiveness of the combination of crowdsourcing and technology with the successful experimentation of iPods as learning tools at Duke University. Several examples of students in this article makes it apparent that each student is unique in their own way and it’s time for society to gain the confidence to reinvent the education system that has failed many bright students who didn’t fit into the system. Once the education system gains the confidence to unlearn its traditional ways and adapt to technological advances, students will be able to explore and maximize their individual skills and reach their full potential.
