In the article Live and Learn: Why We Have College” written by Louis Menand explains three different types of theories of why we have college. These theories cater to three different types of people and how they believe the education system should work. Theory one is the belief that most people are not qualified for college and that if everyone went to college a degree loses its value and that you should be rewarded for your hard work. Theory two believes that everyone should have the same opportunity to attend college and to receive an education. Lastly theory three is the belief that people should go to school strictly for their career training. Theory three is the best because it allows people to focus on their career and the line of work without having to take a bunch of classes they don’t need to get a degree while also saving money, time and effort. It’s a simple process because you would just have to train for the new job opportunity. There is a large need for experienced workers in the work force so there is always an option for someone. Being able to have that opportunity is a huge benefit because if you were to lose your job for theory 1 or theory 2 you would have to go back to school for years and invest more money. With theory three you don’t have that risk. Menand states this great point “theory 3- is that advanced economics demand specialized knowledge and skills, and since high school is aimed at the general learner, college is where people can be taught what they need in order to enter a vocation.”(33). What Menand was saying is that right after completing a GE they can now go to school for what they need to be taught in the work field.
