Americans are always encouraged to support and enjoy art. We are taught to appreciate paintings and listen to different genres of music from a young age. We are told that being different is okay. Creativity and self-expression are constantly being encouraged. Then why are we so judgmental of body art?

Participants in the survey over the age of fifty often were more likely to find tattoos distracting than those in the thirty-five to forty-nine age range (Stevens). While age is just a number, and it is okay for views to vary; many of the high-ranking employers who hire are in this age range, which can give a tattooed person an unfair chance. While, granted, it would not be the best idea to show off every tattoo you may have in an interview; tattoos are permanent and cannot be hidden forever. They will always be

Tattoos and Piercings Bias Tattoos and piercings have become more and more popular fashion statements as artists continue to create new ideas, as well as the acceptance of the ink and jewelry. Although it may seem that there is an approval towards this style, many are put into stereotypical categories based on their appearance. There is a famous saying by unknown author that says, “sometimes the nicest people you meet are covered in tattoos and sometimes the most judgmental people you meet go to church on Sundays,” this quote helps to examine how looks doesn’t matter but action does. Having tattoos shouldn’t be considered against social norms and value because tattoo should be looked as freedom of speech or of expression. In Ronald P. White’s article “The Art, the First Amendment and the Courts” helps demonstrates how tattoos and the art of tattooing are forms of pure expression fully protected by the 1st Amendment which helps protects freedom of speech. People get tattoos to tell one’s story to the world through a visual representation of an important moment, person…

Harper Lee once said “You never really understand a person until you consider things from his point of view… until you climb inside of his skin and walk around in it.” This problem still happens today, everyone judges a person without evening knowing them. When someone judges someone with tattoos and piercings they automatically think he is a bad guy but that isn’t always true. Their point of view can be totally wrong but they would never know. They will never get to truly know the person because their point of view shows them as bad people.…

Even some people who hold a steady job and want a tattoo have to be aware of the strings that come attached to it. One tattoo shop owner, Jason Green, tells college kids that come into his shop that “they are about 80 percent likely not to get hired if they have a tattoo” (Emeigh 2). This I was not surprised to read and very much an expectant. Although the majority of the job world is like this, I feel as though the world is getting better and more accepting when it comes to tattoos; the norms are changing and stereotypes are becoming irrelevant.…

To gather more information, I chose to talk to adult professionals who have multiple body modifications. There were a few reasons I chose this population, but most importantly I think it offers a more valuable perspective into the issue of tattoos and professionalism. Most of the studies that are available report on the perceptions that people have of tattoos and how this might influence the workplace. But it is more insightful to hear the experience of these marked individuals and whether they believe themselves to be repressed. I developed a series of eight questions to ask my participants that would let them share their opinions and experiences.…
