The Art of Suicide Art and emotion influence many of us to do actions we otherwise would not do if we had a larger view of life’s possibilities. In fact, ancient philosophers argued over whether art influenced our emotions too much. Because of that, I hold that we constantly educate ourselves to know emotions are passing mental states. In The Sorrows of Young Werther, the main character, Werther, is heartbroken after he is rejected by the woman he loves. The woman ends up marrying another man and Werther ends up committing suicide because of the heartbreak. When this story was published in Europe, it became controversial due to the fact that many of the readers committed suicide after reading. Even if their pain was too strong, they were encouraged to get help and to reach out and stay strong. Kurt Cobain’s death had a positive impact on his followers. In the fiction case of The Sorrows of Young Werther, many people committed suicide after reading the story because they related too much to Werther and his pain. The Sorrows of Young Werther had a negative impact on its readers. In both cases, however, suicide cannot be justified. I believe this because I believe in what Aristotle thinks about suicide. Killing oneself has no wrong towards the person, however it does wrong towards society. Suicide doesn’t just affect the person who died, it affects the larger society. It may have a negative impact in the case of Werther or it could even have a positive effect in the case of Kurt Cobain. In any case, it’s unpredictable on how much art can influence our lives and our emotions. I believe that it is dependent on the person. As we’ve seen with The Sorrows of Young Werther, Werther’s emotions took a toll on his life. As with many readers who read the story were so overcome with emotion they decided to end their life, too. It is important to educate people about suicide. It is important to educate young people that the intensity of those feelings do not last forever. We need to know first, that how we are feeling right now will not last forever. It’s imperative for young people to understand that they can get help and they are not alone, as they may think they are. Those feelings can be overcome, that is what is important to understand.
