In the fiction case of The Sorrows of Young Werther, many people committed suicide after reading the story because they related too much to Werther and his pain. The Sorrows of Young Werther had a negative impact on its readers. In both cases, however, suicide cannot be justified. I believe this because I believe in what Aristotle thinks about suicide. Killing oneself has no wrong towards the person, however it does wrong towards society. Suicide doesn’t just affect the person who died, it affects the larger society. It may have a negative impact in the case of Werther or it could even have a positive effect in the case of Kurt Cobain. As we’ve seen with The Sorrows of Young Werther, Werther’s emotions took a toll on his life. As with many readers who read the story were so overcome with emotion they decided to end their life, too. It is important to educate people about suicide. It is important to educate young people that the intensity of those feelings do not last forever. We need to know first, that how we are feeling right now will not last forever. It’s imperative for young people to understand that they can get help and they are not alone, as they may think they are. Those feelings can be overcome, that is what is important to understand.
