The Art of Healing was performed by the Ailey Ⅱ company in the Grand Opera House in Wilmington, which started at 7:30pm on October 28th, 2016. The show started at 7;30 pm and lasted for about one an hour and a half. And it included three dances and two intermissions. The dances were Circular, Sketches of Flames, and Revelations. Circular and Sketches of flames are newly choreographed dances by Jae Man Joo and Bridget L. Moore respectively. While Revelations is was originally choreographed by Alvin Ailey in 1960.
Circular combines both classical and contemporary ballets. The stage setting of Circular was dim and dancers wore gray and black simple tight clothes. I did not quite understand the meaning of Circular and, so I did some research which said states that it “captures the full circle of human emotions”. The second dance Sketches of flames was a dance about the joyful or painful love between men and women. All the female dancers wore red dresses which was in that served as a sharp contrast to the black stage background. The red color of the dresses and the fast pace movements represent the passion of love. While the black stage background symbolizes the pain and desperation sometimes associated with love.
My favorite was the third dance Revelations which had three segments: Pilgrim of sorrow, Take me to the water and Move, Members, and Move. As one of the classics of African-American modern dance, Revelations uses dance to depict the changes of African-Americans’ inner…
