Joseph McCarthy Few people in American history have ever plunged the country into panic as Joseph McCarthy did in the 1950s. He single-handedly fabricated a scandal he claimed reached into the highest branches of the US government. Lacking substantial evidence, he accused various senators, representatives, and officials of being communist spies. His infamous “list” of such people was comprised of information that was “either taken from other sources or misremembered or just made up” (Kelley).…

In February of 1950, fellow Republican Senator Joseph R. McCarthy accused 205 members of the State Department of being communist traitors to the United States government. His accusations caused fear, mistrust, and hatred among the senators. Through her speech a few months later, Smith set the record straight and encouraged the Senate to regain “basic principles of Americanism.” Through her use of rhetorical appeals, she restated the Constitutional rights of American people, and caused the senate to see themselves as guilty of betraying those basic…

However, only two days later, when he was writing a letter to the US President, the number tremendously changed, in his letter, Joseph McCarthy stated that he has names of only 57 communists. All of the accusations he made on innocent citizens were backed up by little evidence. Americans were overwhelmed with the rate of communism growing in other countries; therefore they believed in Joseph McCarthy to take their country towards the rightful path. To the citizens, Joseph McCarthy was a politician that promised them to free of the communist influence on the country. However, McCarthy took that into advantage and decided it was best if he were to lie, therefore he accused many innocent people of a crime they did not commit which helped him led his way to success.…

The term ‘McCarthyism’ was coined during this time because of senator Joseph McCarthy. McCarthy rose to prominence because he accused many of those in the government of being communist. This created a huge fear within the government and lead to a witch hunt much like the ones experienced in 1692 Salem. While McCarthy had no solid proof of communist actions he stated at a rally in West Virginia “I have in my hand 57 cases of individuals who would appear to be either card carrying members or certainly loyal to the Communist Party, but who nevertheless are still helping to shape our foreign policy …”(McCarthy). This statement was then later repeated at a rally in Salt Lake and drew the attention of the media.…

When I read The Crucible, I was unable to connect the plot to The Red Scare and Mccarthyism because I didn't have much background knowledge. Now I wonder if the people made the connection while watching the play. If so, did they choose to ignore it because of fear of knowing that something is wrong with society and didn't want the obligation of sparking a change?…
