However, if these folks would follow me to the Snake River for a fishing trip, I think they’d change their minds. If they were to join me on the river, they’d hear the sound of motor boats traveling up the water, and they’d smell the engine exhaust and hear the laughter of the fishermen.…

In the story Grendel by John Gardner, Grendel’s last words are “Poor Grendel’s had an accident… so may you all” (Gardner 174). Grendel did not always despise men ,but he was fascinated by them as the reader can see when Grendel says,” In time I began to be more amused than revolted by what they threatened” (Gardner 32).…

According to dictionary.com, a hero is “a person noted for courageous acts or nobility of character”. In Grendel by John Gardner, the author portrays Grendel in such a light that he is not the hero of the story, even though he is the protagonist. Grendel gave a specific list on what qualities a hero must have, and he has the exact opposite of those qualities. He says that a hero should be great with women, stand tall, be self-aware, and have a great vocabulary. The exact opposite of a hero is a villain, and if his qualities are the exact opposite of being a hero, then he is, therefore, the villain.…

Every step of our sixty-mile Canadian canoeing adventure was another challenge. As Chris Hadfield said, it was just a matter of working the problem. That’s NASA-speak for descending a decision tree, methodically looking for a solution. The most rewarding part was being the man in charge; from meal preparation to dangerous situations, the final say was mine. Of all that we went through, I think our fourth portage (a “trail” between two lakes that are not connected by a traversable waterway) exemplifies my crew’s determination the most.…
